Dive Instructor Hamilton Island, Australia - Chris Ciosk
Since my IDC, I've spent some time picking up some freelance work as in instructor on Koh Tao for a little while before taking a job on Hamilton Island in Australia and working out on the Great Barrier Reef as a full time dive instructor for a season. I've recently completed my credentials to sign off as an MSDT, and am really hoping to make it back to Koh Tao again one day soon.
I had a really great time doing my IDC at Buddha View. Mark and Darius knew what they were doing inside out, and Mark probably knows more about the Koh Tao dive industry than anyone else on the island. Also loved how everytime I had to chat with Mark about the course, it always ended up bein in the Buddha Bar over a bottle of Chang. It was definitely not a dry IDC, we all had a great time and learned a lot. Buddha View was a great place ot make a lot of contacts too, and get a lot of great advice from a ton of very experienced instructors. It's a really close little community, and a really great time.
My advice for someone looking to get into the dive industry is to get into the water every chance you get during your DMT or IDC prep, assist on as many courses as you can, and get out for some divemaster work. I think I did about six OW assists during my DMT, lead 50 dives or so before my IDC, and after that I was really ready to get started as an instructor after finishing my IDC. You can't overestimate a lot of experience. And make sure to get out for a drink now and then. Probably over half of the work that I got on Koh Tao was from students that I brought in myself, or referrals from other dive instructors that I hung out with. Plus it's just a waste of Koh Tao if you don't end up crawling home from Lotus Bar at least every once in a while. Most of all just have fun though, and people will be happy to work with you.

NEW revolutionary PROBE NeoFleece. Available at Buddha View.
Upon receiving my Probe neo Fleece the most important things I was looking for from it were warmth, comfort and portability.
The first opportunity I had to use it was during a pool session on a recent IE on Koh Tao. Now you may ask yourself why worry about warmth on a tropical island such as Koh Tao? Well in my role as examiner I am looking at being in the pool for about 3-4 hrs with little movement, so believe you me cold can be factor.
I must admit, initially, to being reluctant to moving away from my ‘norm’ of a 3mm shorty and long sleeved rash vest. However I put the Probe Neo Fleece on along with a pair of board shorts and got ready to get on with the job. Whilst getting ready I noted, with some anticipation, the dark cloud looming over head.

The Probe Neo Fleece was great just like a second skin keeping me nice and warm and comfortable for the three and half hours I was in the pool, even during the half hour tropical rainstorm the dark cloud had bought with it!! The only thing was my lower half was feeling a bit chilly so I made a mental note to bring some wet shorts next time!!
My next worry was would it dry out in time for me to pack? But no worries here just hung the Probe Neo Fleece over the balcony and we were good to go in no time.

The next couple of times I have used it, Phuket and Koh Samui IEs, I remembered my 3mm wet shorts and combined with using the Probe Neo Fleece, this time for both pool and open water sessions of the Instructor Exam, I have been as warm as toast . The Probe Neo Fleece is a great ‘snug fit’ and the drawstring around the waist prevents the vest from riding up whilst wearing it avoiding a chilly tummy and giving minimum ‘wash through’.
Duffing and donning is not easy, but I guess that’s the price you pay for a snug fit.
It also folds up nice a small so combined with a pair of wet shorts takes up less room in my baggage than my 3mm shorty and rash vest previously did. Keeping my boss happy with baggage allowances being what they are !!
Overall, well I’m a convert its warm comfortable and folds away nice and easy making it nice and portable. Certainly the Probe Neo Fleece is a winner in my book.

4th August 2011 - The PADI organisation, consisting of dive professionals and divers around the globe, expects to reach a major milestone before the end of third quarter 2011 - its 20 millionth diver certification. To celebrate this occasion, PADI Regional Headquarters around the world are sponsoring the “Countdown to 20 Million” campaign, which will award the diver who earns the 20 millionth certification with a trip to dive Australia’s Great Barrier Reef aboard the MV Spirit of Freedom. The PADI Instructor issuing the 20 millionth certification, as well as the affiliated dive center or resort, will each also receive a trip to this natural wonder of the world.
Come and complete your diving certification on Koh Tao, Thailand with Buddha View Dive Resort in August, September or October of 2011 and be in the running for being the 20 millionth PADI Diver certification.
“In 1966, Ralph Erickson and John Cronin had an idea about a better way for people to learn to dive. That the PADI organisation has grown from the two of them to more than 20 million testifies to the power and wisdom of their vision” says PADI Worldwide Chief Executive Officer Brian Cronin. “It also shows how a mutual passion for diving unites the PADI family around the world. Twenty million certifications only happens because PADI professionals lead diving. I salute their achievement.”
The Countdown to 20 Million campaign includes a comprehensive public relations effort coupled with promotion in PADI digital media outlets and a daily, updated countdown counter at padi.com.
Tourism Queensland has graciously provided the land and air portion of the prize packages to the Great Barrier Reef – the world’s largest reef system and one of the natural wonders of the world – including roundtrip airfare to Cairns, Queensland, Australia, four nights accommodations and excursions to explore the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest, a Cuddle a Koala Experience and an Aboriginal Cultural Experience. The MVSpirit of Freedom is generously sponsoring the dive portion of the prize package, which includes a three-day, three-night liveaboard adventure to iconic dive sites like Cod Hole and the Ribbon Reefs, plus a low-level reef flight between Lizard Island and Cairns. The diver receiving the 20 millionth certification will receive a prize package for two, and the certifying instructor and affiliated dive center or resort will each win a trip for one.
“Each of the 135,000 PADI Members around the world not only share a passion for diving and the underwater world, but influence and lead diving in the local community,” says PADI President and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Drew Richardson. “It’s this leadership, backed by passions, interests and convictions, that magnified John and Ralph’s concepts into a global movement of literally millions of people who identify with PADI. As PADI Divers travel locally and internationally, they look for PADI Dive Centers, Resorts and Professionals because they are reassured by the common connection that unifies us as a family or tribe.”

Scuba Videographer Internship Koh Tao, Thailand
At the end of this Pro Underwater Videography course I will be awarded a recognized professional underwater videography certification card. This will open up so many employment possibilities in the dive industry for me.
During the course I am equipped with a Sony HD camera & Aquatica HD Wave Housing, and will learn the skills that are going to help me get a job as an underwater videographer. So far I have learnt entry & exit techniques with a camera, use of white balance, competent finning & position in water, macro filming, composition & correct use of light whilst still adhering to safe diving practices. We have also spent loads of time in Ocean Belows great videography studio on the premises of Buddha View. The staff at Buddha View have been so helpful with their knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro and have taught me how to turn raw footage into a polished, finished piece. These skills include shot selection, colour correction, cutting footage appropriately to music & titles. By the end of the course I will be able to export my finished film in full HD and also smaller sized files which I will instantly upload to the internet and show my family & friends back home!
I can see this as getting addictive. I just might purchase my own equipment and embark on an underwater filming adventure!

I have chosen to concentrate on filming open water courses and have learnt the art of video production & and sales. I figure this will be the easiest way to get work after the video course. I may choose to make my second part of the internship about documentary film making. This is where you get a chance to make a short documentary on a subject of your choosing and take it through from the initial idea to final piece. I might just astound myself with my film making skills.
The pro underwater videography course is starting off fantastically. Every day is an adventure, capturing the true beauty of the underwater world on film and embarking on a passion that is truly addictive. This is the course for me!

Israeli Dive Instructor on Koh Tao - Shahar Alon

Back in 1996 I traveled through Thailand with a fellow friend/musician and since my friend was an Open Water diver; he really wanted to stop by Koh Tao and get his advance certification. I didn’t really see what is the big deal behind scuba diving but I was in for a real good surprise. On the night ferry we made some new friends from Europe and they were all going to learn how to dive. They also were all signed up with Buddha View. So we jumped on the taxi with them and came unannounced.

Dive Instructor - Pro Dive Cairns - Perry Roos
I’m born in Raglan New Zealand and grew up in the water surfing and spear fishing and snorkelling. In 1999 I moved to Holland so I could visit family and travel Europe, it was in 2003 whilst travelling through Egypt that I found myself in Dahab and so I began my diving career.
I began my open water course and probably half way through the course I had already fallen in love with this great sport and as most do I continued straight away with my advanced course doing some amazing dives in and around Dahab.
It was during my advanced that I had already decided to take the move to find somewhere to do my dive master course what I had been told about a chance to dive a lot and even be able to travel and work at the same time it sounded too good to be true. At the time I was on my way back to Holland so after diving around the Red Sea i moved back to Holland as it was time to work again.
After spending another year in Holland and exploring the local dive sites around the area and getting a chance to do some very different diving than what I had experienced in Egypt I decided to travel Asia with the ultimate destination being Thailand to carry on with my rescue and dive master.
Before the trip I had explored on the net around the different options for my training and had decided to make my way to Koh Tao and then on to Koh Phi Phi to find a dive resort to do my dive master course.
Traveling though South east Asia and after meeting people and speaking about the different dive schools there was definitely a trend towards Buddha View on koh tao which was good as I had spent many nights before the trip staring at the computer trying to decide which dive school was better based on the websites which as you know is not always the easiest thing to do specially just judging only by the website.
Upon arriving on koh tao I spent my first two days on sariee beach and made my way around the island visiting the dive shops on my list and after a warm welcome and a very professional greeting at Buddha view by James aka Brownie or to his mates D.S boy to his mates, I decided to sign up for my rescue course and see firsthand the training and the dive school.
After a very good course the other plans of making my way to Phi Phi first were out the window as I had found the place I wanted to stay and can honestly say I already felt at home. So after Signing up for my dive master the training began.
Under the guidance of which I can quiett honestly say after teaching now myself all these years some of the best instructors I have ever met or worked with, I began my internship which involved assisting on courses all the way from the basics of D.s.d’s all the way through to specialty courses but which I found the biggest learning experience was assisting on the open water courses.
Been lucky enough to work with a wide range of amazing instructors and later been able to use what I learnt from them and take what I wanted from their experience to use as my own has made me the instructor I am today.
The Internship most importantly gave me the diving experience on the local dive sites where I had done a couple of hundred dives either assisting one of the full time instructors or dive masters or fun diving which gave me the dive experience and most importantly group control which led me into my first job in the dive industry. Which happend to be at Buddha view as a freelance dive master. I spent a couple of months working for Buddha view when It was time to go back to Holland. Which as anyone can tell you after spending time on the rock it is a never easy to leave.
After making my way back to Holland and trying to settle in to work and the European lifestyle I realised I had found my calling and I just missed that tiny island and the thrill of taking people down and showing them the sites I loved so much and as hard as it was to leave my friends and family it really felt like I was coming home again.
I came back to Buddha view and started my full time dive career working in the Dive master pool which involved the day to day organisation of the dive shop from organising the boat roosters and planning which gave a great insight into the workings of a dive shop.
Meet and greet with the customers including the resort customers which was a crash course in customer service. The day to day running of a resort with bringing customers to rooms and trying to meet all thier needs.
And also the diving leading guided fun dives around the island and organising and leading special trips Ang thong marine park and sail rock some of the full day trips we ran. And where I got my love of teaching I think looking back on it now was taking scuba reviews and re-introducing the sport to people who had been out of the water some times for more than a decade.
When I decided to take the next step and did my Instructor course in the beginning of 2008 it was only natural that I did my course with Mark as it was Mark that had guided me through my Dive master and had also who I had been working under during my time at Buddha view and I went into the course with the knowledge that under the guidance of Mark I had nothing to worry about.
The course itself was great we had a great group of some locals dive masters from Buddha view and some other local dive shops as mark has a very good reputation on the island and some that had come from outside of koh tao though if I can remember most of them didn’t leave well not for a while anyway and on koh tao time that’s more like months or years.
We started up with some class room brushing up on our dive master theory and pool work. The two weeks of the Idc was laid back and as anyone can vouch that has been on an Idc with Mark that the food was amazing and I can honestly say not once did we feel stressed or have any doubts that we would not make it through and as it went we all made it and had a massive party which I think was good cant quiet remember…..
I then carried on to work once again with Buddha view but now as an instructor teaching open waters through to Dive masters for my remaining years on koh tao. Buddha view been a busy dive school gave me a massive opportunity put to practice what I had learnt with my time there certifying more than 700 divers in all courses ranging from open water still today my favourite course to teach but with also a lot of specialty diver courses Nitrox, Deep, Naturalist and Digital photography which is still one of my biggest hobbies taking every chance I get to get out with my camera.
My partner and I decided to move on after our almost five years on that amazing Island most of us refer to affectionately as the Rock and made our way to Australia and it was a tearful good bye to the island which has had such a massive effect on my life and led me to where I am today.
After traveling the east coast we made our way up to Cairns where I started working at Pro Dive as one of the six five day instructors which is the main instructor that runs an open water course starting on a set day each week.
Pro dive been a massive dive school with large groups starting every day, my job as a 5 day instructor involves the teaching of all classroom on average around sixteen students but anything up to twenty two starting each day. And also the retail side of the dive industry working side by side with the retail shop in setting up our students with the necessary equipment to carry on with thier new found life style.
The training begins in the class room with us 5 day instructor teaching the theory side of the course to the students and then the scheduling of pool training split between the other instructors. Then we move on to the boat where I organise the running of the Open water courses and Adventure and Advanced training and also the Dive master candidates. Pro Dive been the Padi flagship here in Australia is an awesome school to work for with an amazing bunch of instructors teaching here on the Great Barrier Reef, giving an awesome experience to the open water students taking them after two days in the pool on a journey to one of the most famous diving mecca’s of the world.
The Outer reef where we are diving has some amazing sites to offer with Minke season starting up again and manta’s and sharks of all kinds still to be found here, six different types of turtles and 1500 different species of fish its and amazing experience for them into the dive world and hopefully inspiring them as I was to carry on and explore what the different places in the world has to offer.
Also the everyday running of our 32 person live aboard which for me was quiet a new experience as working on a big live aboard like ours the running of the ropes and general working of the boat is giving me new challenges every day.
The behind the scenes work on a live aboard like ours is immense with the running of the compressors to the filling of tanks to planning dive sites with reading of tide tables and charts the work never stops but we do it still with a smile as most say this is the life we choose and I could not think of anything being more satisfying.
The last years I have had the privilege of working for two of the best dive schools in the world and through this have learnt from some of the best instructors I have ever met in all my travels around the world diving and I must say I still am learning as I go along and will keep on learning as this is what makes a good instructor.
Working here at Pro Dive is an absolutely great experience and in fact that a lot of us here worked together back on the rock together at Buddha always makes it fun and a lot of drunken nights talking of those good times back on the rock which brought us altogether.
Remembering back to the time when I first took the plunge into this fabulous sport I could never have dreamt that I would have ended up where I am now having the chance to see what I have seen and meet so many people and made so many friends from all over the world.
I can’t imagine where I would have been or what I would have been doing if I had not taken the step and made the call to follow my dreams.
I have had an wicked trip the last six years of being in this great industry which Is a way of life and not really a job as such as every morning when I get up I know what I’m doing is what I love and every day will bring new things and its satisfying knowing that every day you open a new world to people and all I can say is that it is not over its just the beginning.
If you are considering to take the step to become a pro whether it be Dive master or Instructor and you are already going in the right direction and the only advice I have for you is to stop thinking about it and just do it as you will not regrett, you will only regrett what you don’t do and anyone can do this you just have to take the step.
Enjoy and im sure I sill see you around some day as we divers get around as it’s a small world and there and there is soo much to see.
